Google to Distrust Symantec-issued Certificates

Google Chrome has decided to distrust Symantec SSL certificates after a group of test certificates were mis-issued by the latter. Don’t panic yet, as no changes will take effect until 2018. But, we do recommend our customers to be prepared. Course of action will depend on the issuance & expiry dates of your SSL certificates. When Chrome 66 is released in mid-April 2018, all Symantec certificates issued before June 1st, 2016, will no longer be trusted. The 2nd stage will occur with the release of Chrome 70 (expected late Oct 2018). All Symantec certificates issued from their current roots will be distrusted on this date. From December 2017, Symantec will partner up with DigiCert & will use their root certificates to issue SSL’s. Any Symantec certificates purchased/renewed after December will not be affected. If you have a Symantec certificate which was issued prior to June 2016, you will need to get it re-issued before April 2018. If your certificate was issued after June 2016, please wait till December to re-issue/renew your certificate (if the expiry date allows). If your certificate was issued after June 2016 & is due to expire before December 2017, you will need to renew the certificate before expiry and re-key it between Dec 2017 to Oct 2018. Still confused? Need more details? Give our SSL expert Jaspal a call – he knows every vendor’s rules backwards.
