“One-of-a-kind” extension allows for browser hijacking
Malwarebytes has recently discovered extensions in Chrome and Firefox that allow the browsers to be hijacked for differing purposes. The Chrome extension once installed will open a minimized browser window that will then start accessing a variety of YouTube videos in an attempt to artificially bump up the viewer count. The Firefox extension is a little more specific as it targets those looking for weather updates in Columbia, but follows a similar agenda of visiting websites who reward visitors with free content for watching ads and completing tasks. While more annoying than malicious, this does represent the start of a worrying trend when the fact that many users use various and unauthorised extensions at work is taken into consideration.
