PRTG Network Monitor from Paessler AG has a misleading title because it can literally monitor anything that provides an output that can be captured via the network.

For example the room temperature in a Server Room or even the temperature of the Blood Fridge in a Hospital. As we move towards the “Internet of Things”, PRTG delivers the Monitoring of Things.

We have a webinar organised for next Tuesday that can show you the solution in action, but in this email I would like to share why I think PRTG is a tool that every IT department – reseller, MSP and end user – should be aware of. (Webinar details are at the end of the email).

PRTG Network Monitor runs on a Windows machine within your network, collecting various statistics from the machines, software, and devices which you designate. (It can also auto-discover them, helping you map out your network.) It also retains the data so you can see historical performance, helping you react to changes.

PRTG comes with an easy-to-use web interface with point-and-click configuration. You can easily share data from it with non-technical colleagues and customers, including via live graphs and custom reports. This will let you plan for network expansion, see what applications are using most of your connection, and make sure that no one is hogging the entire network just to torrent videos. PRTG can collect data for almost anything of interest on your network.

Multiple protocols are supported for collecting this data:

  • SNMP and WMI
  • Packet Sniffing
  • NetFlow, IPFIX, jFlow, and sFlow

PRTG Network Monitor includes more than 200 sensor types for all common network services, including HTTP, SMTP/POP3 (email), FTP, etc. PRTG can alert you to outages before your users even notice them, including via email, SMS, or pager. Even better, after you use PRTG to track request times and uptime for a few months, you can optimize your network such that the pager never rings again. PRTG can print reports to show how good a job you are doing (Tell your boss that your 100% uptime last quarter deserves a raise and PRTG can even print you the report to do it with).

Everyone we talk to who has ever trialled, used or looked at PRTG Network Monitor always have good things to say about it, key points include:

  • Quick Download, Installation and Configuration – Installs in 3 minutes from a 127Mb download, no additional downloads required. Deploy using Auto Discovery, go and have a coffee, it’s all up and running when you get back.
  • Easy to Use – Choose between 5 User Interfaces including state of the art AJAX based web site; HTML only for older browsers; Native Windows based Enterprise Console; iOS and Android apps for smartphones and tablets.
  • Comprehensive Network Monitoring – over 200 sensor types; Uptime/Downtime Monitoring; Bandwidth Monitoring; Application Monitoring; VM Monitoring; SLA Monitoring; QoS Monitoring; Environment Monitoring; Multi-Site Monitoring; Extensive event logging; Agentless with optional agents for even deeper metrics.
  • Flexible Alerting – Email, SMS, Syslog, SNMP, Sound Alarm, etc.; Status Alerts; Limit Alerts; Threshold Alerts; Multi-condition Alerts; Dependencies; Acknowledge Alarms; Alert Scheduling.
  • Ideal for Managed Service Providers and end-users alike – provides distributed monitoring using Remote Probes to monitor multiple customers in an MSP environment; Monitor all subsidiaries within an organisation; monitor separate networks within a company – all from a single PRTG installation.
  • Data Publishing and Maps – Real time dashboards; Private and public dashboards; Interactive map/dashboard designer.
  • In-depth Reporting
  • Support for Customization and Integration – customizable web interfaces; custom sensors; custom notifications; custom device templates; APIs for Input and Output.
  • Real Value for Money – A single investment delivers all the functionality you require. No add-ons required to cover things like additional dashboards, additional probes, iOS or Android Apps, etc.

Network Computing puts it in a nutshell: “[PRTG Network Monitor] is capable of presenting a lot of easily interpreted information using a single screen and the new web console’s lightning-quick responses makes network monitoring a pleasure, instead of a chore.

PRTG Network Monitor Licensing:

PRTG is licensed by the number of sensors being monitored and comes as packs of either 100, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000 or Unlimited (A sensor is a single thing being monitored – e.g. disk capacity on a server, a network protocol on a switch port, etc.).

An Unlimited Sensor License is available for as little as $16,071.43 plus GST including 1 year maintenance and support. Renew next year for only $4,017.86 plus GST – why would you need anything else? Options for 2 and 3 year support/maintenance are also available.

There is also a 10 Sensor option that is available for free, forever.
