There are always new ways to implement PRTG, but Andreas Ginther takes it to a whole new level with the set-up of a letter count sensor for a smart post box using his own mailbox. The sensor tells him not only when he receives a letter, but also when the mailbox is empty.

With the installation of two special light sensors that recognise when letters come through and if the mailbox is emptied a notification email is sent out to Andreas to keep him informed. A PRTG Custom Sensor starts a script that receives the details about the number of letters that were posted, Andreas learnt in 10 months he had received 275 letters with the slowest month being July.

In a project like this, the components were not free, but PRTG’s free 100 sensor license was sufficient for his solution to work completely.

Generally when using PRTG:

  • It monitors all the systems, devices, traffic, and applications in your IT infrastructure. Everything is included with PRTG; there is no need for additional plugins or downloads.
  • Visualize your network using real-time maps with live status information. Share your map providing its unique URL on a dashboard within your company LAN only, or even outside your company.
  • PRTG comes with many built-in mechanisms for notifications, such as email, push, or HTTP requests. With our free apps for Android and iOS, you can get push notifications delivered directly to your phone.
  • Take advantage of multiple points of presence monitoring: all nodes monitor all sensors all the time, so you can compare response times from different locations in the network (LAN/WAN/VPN).
  • Export your historic monitoring data as PDF, HTML, XML, or CSV files and further process your monitoring data.
  • Use remote probes to monitor your LAN with the hosted version of PRTG. You can also use remote probes to distribute monitoring load. Each PRTG license includes unlimited remote probes.
